School America is responsible for coordinating and implementing a reading program for youth at the Countee Cullen Library in Harlem. Chapter members meet with children monthly around a particular theme. The Committee has registered over 100 adults who have agreed to read to youngsters at least once per week. Parents are actively involved with the program.

New York Alumnae Chapter has been involved in the School America Program since its 1989 inception as a National Program. Most recently the Chapter received a Best Practices Award in the Eastern Region for this program. The program has focused on mostly elementary school age children (though there are some older children), and includes a read aloud section and small group activities.

From the years 2001- 2004 most of the reading for the program years have focused on African American authors and storytellers. Other program highlights include:

  • October 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 participation in the JPMorgan Chase Global Day of Service, where employees from JPMorgan Chase joined us on our Saturday of reading and Pre-Halloween Pizza Party. Children received knapsacks filled with books & school supplies.
  • January 2002 a reader registration drive was held, allowing each child to read aloud to an adult partner & take a pledge to read at least one book aloud to a family member or friend every week
