The
Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy
is a sorority-wide program intended to serve the interests of young girls.
The Academy is designed to offer opportunities to young women who might
otherwise be excluded because they lack the financial resources to gain
access to math, science, leadership and technology experience. The Academy
recognizes the disadvantages many young girls in various communities face,
despite the personal potential of the girls themselves.
New
York Alumnae Chapter began its Delta Academy in 1997 at IS 175 in partnership
with City College with a focus on increasing science skills. Starting
in 1999, we partnered with PS 123 for three years, and we are currently
in partnership with PS 180, the Hugo Newman School. Our members recognize
the importance of working directly with our children to not only raise
test scores, but also raise life chances.
Accordingly,
the Shabazz Academy includes regular group sessions with participants
and Delta volunteers. We also organize and facilitate special presentations
with women in various careers, as well as group field trips in the community
and the greater New York City area. In addition, we have incorporated
a service-learning component to our program, whereby participants volunteer
their time with seniors at the Greater Harlem Nursing Home.
Our
chapter is highly committed to the success of this program. As such,
the Dr. Betty Shabazz Academy is free to all selected participants.
Other benefits include a transportation stipend, as well as the opportunity
to participate in the Academy Leadership Development Weekend, which
is held every two years during the time of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority's
national convention.
